Yesterday I received an email from R Shmuel Kot pointing me to an early source for the Minhag to say pesukim from Tehillim before and after donning the Talit in the morning. 
The commentary (found in Pirkei Shira, Mantua 1661) brings the custom in the name of R’ Shlomo Tiraczine. According to Vanunu in Encyclopdia of Italian Chachamim, R’ Shlomo was born in about 1570, making it extremely likely that his custom predated that of R Natan Shapira brought in Matzat Shmurim in 1659.
